Today the life sciences are more than ever driven by large and complex datasets (from molecular data to patient monitoring data) that typically require extensive domain knowledge to enable interpretation. The group builds upon deep domain expertise in both data science and biotechnology, and its extensive network with research collaborators, healthcare providers and major industrial partners to develop algorithms and workflows to make sense of complex life science data. Technological focus areas are domain specific feature engineering, machine learning and pattern discovery techniques and biomedical recommendation systems. Our techniques are used to generate new insights in diverse areas, ranging from systems biology to personalized medicine.

Application domains

  • Decision support for personalized medicine
  • Bioanalytical technologies
  • Medical applications: infectious diseases, immunology, intensive care, oncology
